Blog post #4

Honestly, twitter has never caught my attention. When I made my first twitter account, I was uncomfortable uploading quotes or just general statements relating to my personal life. Many of my peers are very social on twitter by displaying their beliefs and emotion, however, I prefer keeping such manners to myself. After creating an account for educational reasons, I was intrigued by how many interesting recent articles appeared. I am allowed to get myself posted on the very interesting articles. Twitter would be useful for me in the future if I followed visual impairment accounts, and being posted on how other visual rehabilitation therapist are treating their patients
The digital divide affects an individual’s confidence once they enter the work field. If a student has grown up in an environment surrounded by technology (student A), they will be more willing to explore a new software. However, if a student grew up in a rural environment, they will shy away from exploring technology (Student B).  For instance, if both students were introduced to a draw program (allow students to create digital images), student A would most likely know how to maneuver the system, while student B is a might lost. Student A has access to a draw program back at her home since she has a computer, while student B does not.

Evaluating a website is extremely important if you want to receive true information. Many should be aware of a website’s political stance, the author’s background, the website’s layout, and the domain if you want to receive relatable information. When I am conducting research for a paper, I am very cautious of the author’s creditability, the time when it was written, and the domain name. The factors that I just listed is important because you need credible information for your assignment, and many individuals have easily lied on the internet before.

After reading the ELA technology standards, I realized that I am prepared to teach “Use Multiple Sources.” I am capable of teaching this standard for the fact being that I have mastered this skill. I have written numerous essays for which I had to be very careful when it came to citing information so I would not encounter legal issues. A standard that I do not feel very comfortable is “Multimedia:” Literature. I believe that I would have to take courses that deals with analyzing multimedia elements to master this standard.

As a teacher, I would like to us instant messaging(IM) with my students. Instant messaging would allow me to send daily reminders to my students and vice versa. Back in high school, a teacher of mine would use the app “Remind” to send us reminders of assignments and if we had any questions, we would receive a response soon via the app. With my students (ages 9-11), I would address the digital citizenship concepts. They need to be aware that even though you are not physically communicating with an individual, you are by a device. The way the portray themselves via the internet is a reflection of who they are and there are other individuals involved.

At first, I was intimidated by the Newsletter assignment because I never had to anything creative on Microsoft words besides writing essay. From doing this assignment, I have learned how to add columns to any assignments done on word. I like how this effect allows multiple columns on a page. However, I disliked the moments where the banner would randomly move. This assignment taught me that it takes creativity to make an assignment aesthetically pleasing and it is a reflection of your dedication to your career.  This assignment is useful because in the future I will most likely send Newsletter to my patents to keep them updated.
Here is an image of my Newsletter assignment:

Ever since elementary school, I have done assignments that requires Microsoft Word. Over the years, I have typed the majority of my essays on Microsoft Word. As a college student, I have taken notes on Microsoft words. By doing so, I have been able to record more information that my professor has provided. In addition, I have noticed that my teachers have used Microsoft Word to create their lesson plans, syllabus, and worksheets.  A teacher that I had in high school would always type up the expectations for each assignment via Microsoft Word and would hand it out to her students for clarity.
Living in a digital environment, I have always been aware of copyrighted material. There were many occasions for which my teachers explicitly told the class what materials were appropriate due to copyrighted issues. For a project that I did, I had to be very selective for which song I would incorporate in my PowerPoint to avoid legal issues, but my reasons are under the fair use guidelines.  As a teacher, I would thoroughly read all the fair use guidelines so my materials would not interfere with it and explain my students work that is copyrighted and how to not to credit for another individual’s work.

As a teenager, I only used twitter for the purpose of finding funny contexts. However, I learned that Twitter is an incredible tool for connecting with your students. I discovered that Twitter and other personal learning networks can be used to remind students of due dates, contact with students and parents faster, and take classroom time. There are numerous personal learning networks that has given teachers, students, and parents a tremendous advantage regarding contacting one another.

As technology advances, so does the equipment in a classroom setting. Across the nation, a computer is the key device. The computer gives teachers and students access to multiple programs that are time savers, reduces space, and improves their educational experience. Nowadays, there are software that allows teachers to input attendance and grades rather than keeping a physical record. For students, many will engage in activities via the internet that will incorporate the materials they have learned. The book, Teaching and Learning with Technology, mentions numerous organizations, such as the Association for Educational Communications and Technology and the International Society for Technology in Education, that focuses on the usage of technology in the classroom setting and their benefits. As technology has created a change in the education field, many teachers still believe incorporating technology in their classroom is not necessary. This is an error on the teacher’s part because they need to expose their students of the skills they will need in the long run. In addition, even though the computer is beneficial to both teachers and students, standards and assessment tests should be mandatory so both sides will get the most out of the computer.
The International Society for Technology in Education have developed standards of technology for teachers and students in order for each individual to be a productive member in the technological era. The ISTE standards for students’ goal is to prepare them with the technological knowledge that is needed in order to become successful in the future. A standard that caught my attention was digital citizenship. I admired how the ISTE is promoting positive usage of technology among our students because our students need to be aware of the legal and emotional consequences of their actions. The ISTE standards for teachers’ goal is to make sure they are successful in their career and enhance their students experience with enriching learning experiences. A standard that I have yet to master is model digital age work and learning. Frankly, I am embarrassed for the fact that there are a number of software’s that I am not familiar with. However, I am aware that in order to be an effective teacher, I will need to master any flaws that I have that would interfere with my student’s experience in the classroom.
I recently came across a podcast named as “Digital Natives”, that introduces a set of terminology to distinguish an individual’s experience and sense of comfort among technology, such as digital native and digital immigrant.  A digital native is an individual who grew up in an environment surrounded by technology and cannot remember a time period without technology. On the contrary, a digital immigrant is an individual who was introduced to technology as it was being developed. A digital native is known for learning how to maneuver through new technology with no help, as a digital immigrant is more cautious and prefers using a form of guide as they are exposed to a new device. Today’s youth is primarily digital natives for the fact that they are constantly surrounded by technology. My generation has been exposed to numerous devices that has made daily tasks convenient. As a student, there have been several incidents where my teacher was not aware of what they were doing on their computer and would need a student’s assistance. My classmates and I would often find our teacher’s lack of knowledge humorous since we envisioned our teachers as “old”. Even though their lack of knowledge took away time from the lesson, these incidents reminded us that our teachers are just like any other person and they are trying their best to keep up with these advances. Just as my previous teacher faced hindrances with the advancing technology, so will I. Even though I grew up in a decade of technology, my students will use the upcoming technology for personal benefits while I would use the technology for work related manners. Eventually, I will be the individual who will need assistance with the new upcoming technology.
